Signaling
Pilots should always carry a variety of signaling devices in the aircraft—ideally in the survival vest being worn. A handheld personal locator beacon will help assure a quick rescue in the event that the ELT fails. Flares, a signal mirror, and a whistle can help direct rescuers to your location.
To aid search aircraft, create a large X in an open area that is visible from the air—this is a universally recognized distress signal and is easier than creating an SOS marking. Use items from the aircraft or natural materials such as logs or rocks. Another technique is to build 3 fires in a triangle or in a line along a river—this is also a universally recognized distress signal. In open areas create black smoke using oil, rubber, or evergreen branches. In wooded areas create white smoke using green branches or moss.
