Notebook computers, iPads, and iPhones utilize lithium-ion batteries which are subject to thermal runaway. If smoking or fire occurs, pouring water on the device is the best way to cool it and extinguish the flames. Fire extinguishers are less desirable because they do not provide cooling, and only temporarily suppress the flames by eliminating the oxygen necessary for combustion.
