In the fall the jet stream begins moving down from the arctic regions, infusing moist surface low pressure systems with cold air and creating fog and severe icing in the Midwest. This pattern can be detected as much as a week in advance on high altitude weather charts when a strong low pressure system is observed moving toward the southeast.
