Heading Indicator
The Heading Indicator utilizes a gyroscope to indicate magnetic heading once it has been aligned with the magnetic compass. It provides a more stable method of maintaining a heading during flight maneuvers since it is not does not oscillate in turbulence and is not subject to magnetic dip, turning, and acceleration errors like the magnetic compass. However, it will gradually drift off the correct magnetic heading due to the Earth’s rotation and internal friction. During flight, the Heading Indicator should be checked every 15 minutes for proper alignment and reset to the correct magnetic heading shown by the magnetic compass.
